It started with my mother.

The Story Behind Ophthalytics

She has diabetes, and during a visit to Atlanta, she needed an eye check-up. Simple, right? But despite our efforts, we couldn't get an appointment with an ophthalmologist for months—the earliest available slot was four months away.

That wait time wasn't just inconvenient. It was dangerous.

I kept wondering: How many others face these same delays? How many people are losing their vision—not because their condition is untreatable, but because they simply can't get diagnosed in time?

As I dug deeper, the numbers were staggering.

Over 65,000 people in the U.S. lose their vision every year due to late detection of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases.

Yet, research shows that 95% of vision loss is preventable with early detection and timely treatment.

This wasn't just a gap in the system. It was a healthcare crisis.

That realization changed everything. I knew we had to build a solution—one that would bring AI-assisted retinal screening directly to clinics and communities, making early detection faster, easier, and more accessible.

The estimated cost of eye disorders and vision loss in the U.S. exceeds $139 billion annually, including medical expenses, lost productivity, and long-term disability care.

The numbers don't lie—vision loss is costing lives and billions in preventable healthcare expenses.

Our journey started with a personal experience—when our founder's mother, a diabetic patient, had to wait four months for an ophthalmology appointment. That delay wasn't just frustrating; it was dangerous.

  • $98.7 billion in direct medical costs—including hospital care, nursing home expenses, and supportive services
  • $35.5 billion in indirect costs such as lost productivity, absenteeism, and informal care

Among these:

  • Medical expenses accounted for $53.5 billion
  • Nursing home care alone cost $41.8 billion
  • Reduced labor force participation due to vision impairment led to a $16.2 billion loss in economic productivity

On average, vision loss costs $16,838 annually per affected person.

On the other hand, Medicare, the largest payer of medical expenses for eye diseases, faces a significant financial burden due to common vision disorders. In 2018, 41% of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries had at least one claim related to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy (DR), or glaucoma.

Medicare payments for these conditions totaled $10.1 billion, broken down as follows:

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): $3.5 billion
  • Cataracts: $3.6 billion
  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR): $0.8 billion
  • Glaucoma: $2.2 billion

These four conditions accounted for 4% of all Medicare Part B spending and 1% of Medicare Part D spending among fee-for-service beneficiaries. The average annual treatment costs per patient were:

  • AMD: $1,290
  • Cataracts: $360
  • Diabetic retinopathy: $781
  • Glaucoma: $543

Vision loss isn't just a healthcare issue—it's an economic and quality-of-life crisis.

  • Early detection — AI screening helps detect diseases early, preventing costly late-stage treatments and saving billions in medical expenses
  • Addressing health inequities — millions of Americans, especially in rural and underserved communities, lack access to eye specialists. AI-powered screenings help bridge this gap, ensuring more people get the care they deserve

Eventually, what started as a solution for my mother has now grown into a mission to ensure no one has to wait months for a test that could save their vision.

Of course, scaling AI in healthcare comes with challenges. Regulatory hurdles, system integration, and physician adoption remain key barriers.
